The origin of gambling is mysterious. However, the first record of gambling dates back to China as long as 2300 B.C. It is a generally belief that gambling, in one form or another, has been present in almost every society since its inception. Right from Ancient Greeks and Romans to Napoleon's France and then Elizabethan England, the history of mankind is rich with incidences of exploits based on gambling. The extent to which the seriousness of gambling rose can be exemplified by a decree of the Roman lawmakers which read that all children should be taught to gamble and throw dice. One Roman emperor went forward to design his carriage to allow dice games enroute his official duties. The credit of Playing cards goes to the French which dates back to 1387. However, the first full deck of cards was printed in 1440 by Johann Gutenberg of Germany.
Gambling and casino games that are played now are incarnations of the same old previous games. The French working class adopted the Egyptian game of Roulette in the sixteenth century, while Napoleon was interested in the card game vingt-et-un—what we now term as blackjack or twenty-one. The predecessor of craps is ’Hazard’ a game initially developed by the British and the source of modern poker games is believed to have originated from an amalgamation of ancient influences including Persian, Italian, and English games of chance. Further refinements to poker include betting techniques introduced by the French and the concept of bluffing developed by the British. |
